Colorbond side fence meets a glass pool fence
Many pools sit beside a boundary fence. Here is how the two work together, and what the QBCC says about neighbours.
Where the two fences meet
A glass pool fence often ends at a boundary fence, and that join is worth checking. The gap under the barrier should be 100mm or less, as the QBCC says, and nothing at the join should give a foothold on the outside.
The dividing fence and your neighbour
If the boundary fence is shared with a neighbour, the QBCC has rules about notice for fencing work. It says to give notice generally 14 days before the work, or 1 month if the neighbour also has a pool, and it mentions a Form 39 notice and a 2-month window to apply to QCAT after giving that notice. Confirm the process for your own fence with the QBCC, because it depends on your situation.
Painting the side fence
A Colorbond side fence can be painted, and tidy fencing helps the whole pool area. If you paint it, protect the glass panels and hardware nearby. See painting near a glass pool fence. Check with the manufacturer or a painter about the right preparation for Colorbond.
Checking the join
- Look at the gap under the barrier where the two fences meet.
- Check nothing on the outside, such as a bracket or post cap, creates a ledge greater than 10mm.
- Check the glass is not touching or rubbing the side fence.
See the glass pool fence requirements.
Painting a Colorbond fence
Brushworks Painters, who paint Colorbond fences in Sydney's Inner West, lists Colorbond fence painting among its services in NSW, where fencing rules differ from Queensland, so check the rules where you live.
Common questions
Do I have to tell my neighbour before changing a shared fence near my pool?
The QBCC says notice is generally 14 days before the work, or 1 month if the neighbour also has a pool. Confirm the process for your fence with the QBCC.
Can I paint a Colorbond fence next to a glass pool fence?
Yes, but protect the glass and hardware first, and check the manufacturer's guidance on preparing Colorbond.
What should I check where the fences join?
The gap under the barrier (100mm or less), any ledge on the outside (no more than 10mm), and that the glass is not rubbing the side fence.
